Adhikaar, meaning rights in Nepali, is a New York-based non-profit organization working with Nepali communities to promote human rights and social justice for all.

Participatory Research

So little documentation is available or has been published about the Nepali community in New York.  We conduct participatory research to document the needs of Nepali-speaking community in New York area. With the guidance of an Advisory Team, Adhikaar Outreach Members took to the streets to interview and survey 300 community members on their occupations, migration patterns and living conditions. This information was compiled into the first comprehensive community needs assessment of our community, including surveys, focus group discussions, and individual interviews. The report published in 2010 - Snapshots of the Nepali-Speaking Community in New York: Demographics and Challenges - provides the baseline data about our community. A copy of the report is available for download JankariReport2010.pdf.

In the Spring 2010, we launched a national campaign, with emphasis in New York City, to raise awareness about the importance of participating in
2010 US Census to ensure a more accurate count of Nepalis living in the country.

Adhikaar is currently serving as an anchor organization for a participatory national domestic workers' survey. We are also developing a survey instrument to document the working condition of nail salon workers, with active participation of nail salon workers.
