Time: Part-Time

Duration: August 1, 2026 – June 30, 2027

Location: In-person (Sunday classes required) Compensation: $30 per hour

Position Summary:

Adhikaar is seeking a dedicated and community-centered English for Empowerment (EFE) Facilitator to support adult learners through our Adult Literacy Program. The EFE Facilitator will prepare and deliver English language and literacy classes that promote confidence, self-advocacy, and community empowerment.

This is a temporary, part-time hourly position with a commitment of approximately 5–10 hours per week, depending on class assignments, preparation time, and program needs. The position may be extended based on program needs and funding availability.

The Facilitator will work closely with the Adult Literacy Consultant to develop curriculum, support participant learning, track progress, and help ensure a high-quality, learner-centered educational experience.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Curriculum Development & Preparation

  • Collaborate with the Program Lead to develop and adapt curriculum appropriate to participants' English proficiency levels

  • Conduct participants need assessments to identify learning goals, interests, and barriers to participation.

  • Create engaging, culturally responsive, and empowerment-focused lesson plans and instructional materials.

  • Integrate advocacy, leadership, and community engagement themes into lessons as appropriate.

Class Facilitation

  • Facilitate weekly in-person Adult Education Classes assigned to you. (English For Empowerment Classes-Basic class, Intermediate class, Digital Literacy class, Conversation Class, Citizenship Civic Test Preparation Class)

  • Develop lesson plans for each class with guidance from the adult education coordinator.

  • Develop evaluation tools and progress reports for each participant with guidance from the adult education coordinator. Use interactive, learner-centered teaching methods that encourage participation and confidence-building.

  • Support participants in achieving individual learning goals.

  • Foster a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for adult learners.

Data, Attendance & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate attendance records and participant information.

  • Track participant progress, goals, outcomes, and success stories.

  • Submit weekly updates and reports to the supervisor.

  • Assist with participant evaluations and program assessments.

  • Support the Adult Literacy Consultant in developing program evaluation reports.

  • Conduct participant follow-up and communication as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

  • Commitment to Adhikaar’s mission, values, and community-centered approach.

  • Minimum one (1) year of experience in adult education, literacy programs, community-based services, or grassroots organizing (volunteer experience may be considered).

  • Experience working with immigrant, refugee, and diverse multicultural communities.

  • Strong communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and digital learning tools.

  • Ability to work in person on Sundays.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Fluency in both English and Nepali (spoken) required.

Preferred

  • Ability to read and write in Nepali.

  • Prior experience teaching ESL, adult literacy, or English language learners.

  • Community outreach and engagement experience.

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Education, Adult Learning, Social Work, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Flexibility to work mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends as needed.

  • Demonstrated experience working with immigrant and refugee communities.

Expectations & Conduct

  1. As a representative of Adhikaar, the Adult Education Facilitator is expected to:

  2. Follow all Adhikaar policies, procedures, and supervisory guidance. Maintain strict confidentiality regarding participant, staff, and organizational information.

  3. Use only Adhikaar-approved systems and platforms for storing or accessing participant data.

  4. Demonstrate professionalism, punctuality, reliability, and appropriate attire in all program settings. Attend required orientations, trainings, meetings, and staff check-ins.

  5. Uphold Adhikaar’s values of dignity, equity, inclusion, and community empowerment. Refrain from soliciting memberships, donations, or funds unless specifically authorized by Adhikaar.

  6. Follow the established chain of supervision and keep the direct supervisor informed of work-related matters before contacting management or other staff regarding program issues.

Employment Terms

This is a temporary, part-time hourly position scheduled from August 2026 through June 2027. Employment may be extended based on program needs and funding availability. Adhikaar reserves the right to amend or terminate this employment arrangement at any time, subject to applicable federal, state, and local laws.

In accordance with New York City’s Earned Safe and Sick Time Act, part-time employees are entitled to accrue up to 40 hours of paid safe and sick leave per calendar year, accruing at a rate of one (1) hour for every 30 hours worked.
