About Adhikaar

Adhikaar, meaning “rights” in Nepali, is a women-led community and workers’ center based in Queens, New York. We provide direct services and organize low-income Nepali from South and Southeast Asia (Nepal, India, Bhutan, Myanmar, Tibet and the diaspora), and other impacted communities, to advance social justice and human rights.

Founded by working-class immigrant women, Adhikaar is rooted in grassroots leadership, collective action, and building community power. For over 20 years, we have been a trusted home (“maiti ghar”) for our community supporting workers, advancing dignity, and fighting for systemic change.

As Adhikaar enters its next chapter of growth and impact, the Organizing Manager plays a central role in leading the organizing team that builds the base, leadership, and campaigns driving Adhikaar's fight for justice.

Position Summary

The Manager of Organizing & Campaigns is responsible for strengthening Adhikaar's organizing infrastructure and leading the implementation of community organizing strategies that build collective power among Nepali and Himalayan immigrant communities.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Policy & Advocacy, this position supervises organizing staff while building the organizational systems that connect direct services, leadership development, and policy advocacy. The Manager ensures that organizing is integrated across departments and that every community interaction creates opportunities for deeper engagement, membership, leadership development, and collective action.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Organizing Leadership

  • Translate Adhikaar's strategic plan, policy agenda, and organizational priorities into integrated organizing campaigns.

  • Develop annual and multi-year organizing strategies that strengthen community power and advance systems change.

  • Identify emerging issues affecting Nepali-speaking and Himalayan immigrant communities and recommend responsive organizing strategies.

  • Ensure organizing campaigns align with Adhikaar's mission, values, and long-term movement-building goals.

Organizing Infrastructure & Cross-Department Coordination

  • Design and strengthen organizational systems that move community members from services to organizing, leadership, and advocacy.

  • Partner with program managers to ensure client engagement strategies intentionally incorporate membership recruitment, leadership development, civic engagement, and campaign participation.

  • Convene regular cross-program coordination meetings to identify emerging community issues, align outreach strategies, and strengthen collective impact.

  • Work closely with Communications, Development, and Research teams to ensure campaigns, storytelling, and fundraising reinforce organizing priorities.

  • Document and continuously improve organizing systems, workflows, and best practices.

Membership Growth & Base Building

  • Developing year-round membership recruitment and engagement strategies.

  • Increasing active membership participation across campaigns and organizational initiatives.

  • Building systems that strengthen member retention and long-term engagement.

  • Creating multiple pathways for community members to participate at different levels of leadership.

Leadership Development & Political Education

  • Coordinate political education curricula that deepen members' understanding of immigrant justice, labor rights, civic engagement, racial justice, gender equity, and community organizing.

  • Oversee Know Your Rights trainings, organizing workshops, and leadership institutes.

  • Support organizers in identifying and mentoring emerging leaders.

  • Create opportunities for members to facilitate trainings, lead meetings, speak publicly, and represent Adhikaar in advocacy spaces.

  • Build intentional intergenerational leadership opportunities that engage youth, workers, and long-term community leaders.

Campaign Implementation

  • Coordinate organizing campaigns, advocacy initiatives, public actions, and community mobilizations.

  • Support campaign strategy development alongside the Associate Director.

  • Ensure campaigns incorporate leadership development, base building, and political education rather than focusing solely on mobilization.

  • Coordinate campaign timelines, deliverables, and evaluation across organizing staff.

  • Support rapid response organizing during emerging community issues.

Team Supervision & Organizational Culture

  • Supervise, mentor, and coach organizing staff.

  • Foster a collaborative, reflective, and learning-oriented organizing culture.

  • Support hiring, onboarding, and mentoring of new organizing staff, interns, and volunteers.

External Relations & Coalition Building

  • Cultivate relationships with community leaders, elected offices, institutions, schools, faith communities, labor unions, and coalition partners.

  • Represent Adhikaar in coalition meetings, public forums, and advocacy spaces.

  • Support members to testify, meet elected officials, participate in civic processes, and engage in movement leadership.

  • Strengthen partnerships that expand organizing opportunities for members locally and nationally.

Equity, Inclusion & Community Care

  • Ensure organizing spaces are culturally responsive.

  • Center the leadership of women, youth, immigrant workers, refugees, LGBTQ+ community members, and historically marginalized populations.

  • Promote organizing practices rooted in dignity, belonging, language justice, and collective care.

  • Foster an inclusive organizational culture where community members can meaningfully shape campaigns and organizational priorities.

Qualifications

Required

  • Demonstrated commitment to Adhikaar's mission of human rights and social justice.

  • Demonstrated experience integrating direct services, leadership development, community organizing, and policy advocacy to build long-term community power.

  • At least five years of experience in community organizing, base-building, or campaign work, including at least three years supervising or leading staff or teams.

  • Track record of leading organizing campaigns and developing member leaders.

  • Experience facilitating trainings, workshops, or political education.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations and a wide variety of professional backgrounds and experiences.

  • Ability to work in a team as well as lead independent projects.. 

  • Must be eligible to work in the US.

Preferred

  • Experience organizing with immigrant workers or low-wage communities.

  • Experience with civic engagement or policy campaigns.

  • Familiarity with organizing databases and digital organizing tools

  • Bilingual: Nepali and English 

  • Additional skills in Tibetan, Hindi and indigenous languages of Nepal.
